Black Pete - Bloggers

Black Pete is outshining Satan Claus this year. I have not been able to keep up with the other bloggers, but there is no time like the present to start a list. Even though I start with one blog, I will continue to add to the list as I seek out the bloggers that have a story to tell.

This blogger points out that there are Black people who are willing to put on black-face to act like Black Pete. It is interesting, because their own Black skin does not make them Black Pete. They have to put on black-face like white Pete, to be able to transform into Black Pete. Does that make them a white Pete when the make-up gets wiped off? If they are getting paid, then they are Sambos. If they do it for free, then... Satan is winning.

Quinsy Gario:

Gario made world press when he got arrested last year, for wearing a T-shirt with the text Zwarte Piet Is Racisme (Black Pete Is Racism). He got pepper-sprayed, arrested and dragged off to a Zen-like prison cell.
Gario came up with the idea for protesting the Black Pete insanity after his mother told him that some coworkers had called her Black Pete in front of customers. When he noticed that a major Dutch department store did not use Black Petes when using Sinterklaas in its globalizing efforts, he praised them for setting an excellent example. Short story shorter, he made the T-shirt, wore it, placed an advertisement on Facebook, and the rest is history.
Whereas the Dutch mainstream media had not been interested in acknowledging the racism that Black Pete represents, this year some mainstream media allowed for the voicing of the overt racism and hypocrisy. Gario has ended the T-shirt project this Sinterklaas, and has moved on to the next project: Roet in het eten (Spoil the Party, literally: Soot In the Food. (It is a Dutch thing.)
Even though this is a Dutch site, there are some posts in English; I recommend the one from Greg Shapiro.
